You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers

If you can’t find the answers to your questions below, please email or tweet @NMiTE_DC and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

It’s a select group of young people assembled to co-create NMiTE.

NMiTE stands for New Model in Technology & Engineering. It’s a planned new university, in Hereford, backed by industry, government and Herefordshire Council, set up to pioneer a new form of engineering education – one designed to equip learners with the right skills for the future. You can read more about it here.

Because we believe that engineering education in the UK is due a fresh and radical approach. You can read more about it here.

NMiTE is in Hereford, a bustling cathedral city in the west of England.

You need to be at least 18 on 1st September 2018 to take part.

No, this is not a course of study. Instead you will be helping to design what will be Britain’s first new university in 40 years. You will not accrue any academic credits, and you will not be classed as a student for any other purpose, such as Council Tax exemption.

You will receive a stipend for your time with us at the equivalent of circa £14,000 per year pro rata. This contribution is equivalent to the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage for age 25 and over (irrespective of your age).

You will be responsible for arranging and paying for your own accommodation, but we will be happy to provide local information on Hereford and offer you support.

To be part of the Design Cohort, you must either be a UK/EU National, or have existing immigration permissions which permit work in the UK. Please contact us if you have any queries specifically about your eligibility for this exciting opportunity.

This is, to all intents and purposes, a full-time opportunity for each 14 to 16-week stint. As part of the whole process, you’ll be expected at times to engage in NMiTE activities in Hereford and elsewhere outside ‘normal’ hours. It is certainly not a 9-5 proposition!

The Design Cohort will be running at the following times:
3rd September – 21st December 2018 (16 weeks)
3rd January 2019 – 12th April 2019 (c.14 weeks)
25th April 2019 – 7th August 2019 (16 weeks)

On the application form you can tell us which you can commit to. Some or all, the choice is yours.

No, a general interest in engineering would be helpful but we are more interested in your passion, curiosity and grit.

We think it’s an ideal gap year option, whether you’re considering going to university, have recently left or are about to graduate. You’ll be able to demonstrate your talents in a real-world environment and explore new ones that may shape your choice of future career. You’ll gain valuable and creative work experience and become a permanent member of NMiTE.

The process comprises an initial online application which includes a two-minute video response to the question: ‘How could you help build a new university?’. In addition, you will be asked to submit a 100-200 word answer to each of three questions (details can be found on the application page). Successful applicants will be invited to a Selection Day where teams will be given a variety of tasks to complete. Members of the NMiTE Design Cohort will be chosen on the basis of their grit, curiosity, passion and teamwork.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has kindly agreed to provide funding for a select number of scholarships. The scholarships will provide financial assistance to Design Cohort participants who show particular interest in, and engagement with, issues associated with engineering and sustainability for the water industry.

Email us or tweet @NMiTE_DC with your specific question and we will clarify as soon as possible.
